After seven unsuccessful surgeries trying to lessen his post-surgical CRPS, pain management doctors eventually recommended Rob undergo Ketamine infusions or have a spinal cord stimulator implanted in his spine.
I’m honored to say this electrician said ‘no thanks’ to both options and chose Calmare Therapy.
As more people battling chronic pain seek drug-free, non-invasive pain management alternatives, we are focusing our efforts to connect with related publications who are interested in sharing Calmare’s pain relief potential.
This month, Dr. Michael Cooney is a guest blogger for Explore Holistic, a website that examines alternative methodologies to improve health and protect wellness.
Scrambler therapy can be particularly effective for chronic pain patients who have been unsuccessful lessening chronic nerve pain using pain medications, opioids, spinal cord stimulators and other implanted devices, Ketamine therapy, physical therapy, nerve blocks and so on…
“One of reasons I introduced Calmare to my pain management clinic was to offer a viable therapy that does not cause additional pain to patients,” says Dr. Michael Cooney, clinical director and certified Calmare provider.
Zahira Hodge, RN, MSN, a 33-year-old registered nurse from Virginia, was unable to work due to debilitating pain from CRPS. The condition left her unable to be on her feet all day and her chronic pain eventually forced her to make a tough decision to leave a career she loved.
In 2014, after undergoing corrective surgery as the result of an ankle fracture and torn ligaments, the pain in her foot did not subside and eventually began to spread up her leg to her knee.
Unable to determine the root cause of the neuropathy, she had a subsequent surgery to have all of the ‘hardware’ removed from the ankle surgery, to see if this was the cause of her pain.
Trying pain medication, needles, blocks and a spinal cord stimulator
After her eventual CRPS diagnosis, she used her healthcare expertise to undergo a variety of pain management treatments, including prescription and over-the-counter pain medications which only made her feel mentally foggy and exhausted.
She eventually pursued invasive treatments such as nerve blocks, injections and, eventually, the surgical implantation of a spinal cord stimulator (SCS).
Although she initially experienced a few complications following the SCS placement, she was able to get some relief from the CRPS symptoms affecting her ankle. However, the SCS failed to resolve her chronic pain level of 7-9/10 in her knee.
Her husband began researching alternative pain management options on the internet and discovered Calmare Therapy.
“When I read the information and watched the Calmare patient videos, I started to feel very optimistic,” Zahira recalls.
“I had considered DRG therapy, but just couldn’t see putting myself through another invasive procedure.”
“I am especially honored when healthcare professionals turn to Calmare as their personal pain treatment choice,” says Calmare NJ USA clinical director Dr. Michael Cooney.
“They are open to alternative neuropathic pain therapies, especially those that don’t involve using prescription drugs or painful procedures.”
Zahira takes a leap of faith and heads to Calmare NJ USA
When she arrived in New Jersey in January 2018, her pain level was a consistent 8/10 and her pain region extended from her foot to her knee, requiring Zahira to use a cane for mobility.
“I’ll be honest, after all the pain treatment therapies I had already tried, I was skeptical scrambler therapy was going to work for me,” she recalls. “But as Dr. Cooney told me, the worst thing that could happen is it wouldn’t work.”
Thankfully, this was not the case.
After her eighth Calmare treatment, with a little support from our therapy dog Murphy, Zahira’s knee pain was gone and her leg pain was a manageable 1-3/10.
Looking back and driving forward
“Let me be clear–Calmare has changed my life,” she says with a smile. “I am looking forward to doing everyday things again, like driving a car and walking up the stairs unassisted.”
She is also committed to resuming her career and earning her Ph.D. in nursing.
“Taking a chance on Calmare was the best decision of my life. I have my mobility back, which I feared would never return. It was worth the risk. I only wish we had found it sooner.”

The New Jersey woman tried traditional CRPS medications and other pain management treatments, but the pain worsened.
She discovered Calmare Pain Therapy Treatment online and read about other CRPS patients who had come from around the world for Dr. Michael Cooney’s treatment, many with lower extremity nerve pain.
Rosemary consulted directly with the doctor and was approved to undergo scrambler therapy.
Rosemary describes her scrambler therapy pain treatment
Is your pain management medication or therapy leaving you still in pain?
You are not alone, first and foremost.
The majority of our patients arrive at our clinic after trying bags full of medications and undergoing painful and invasive treatments,–spinal cord stimulators, nerve blocks, etc. without achieving pain relief.
If approved for treatment, you will have an opportunity to undergo a painless procedure over the course of 10 days that has no unpleasant side effects.
We wish we could report that Calmare is a ‘miracle’ treatment and will end your pain. For many this has occurred. But it does not work for every patient, for reasons which can be explained, and sometimes cannot.

Laurie Mounts was injured in 2008 and later diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). When she presented at Calmare Therapy NJ in July 2014, her pain level was a 9/10 on her entire left side from her feet up to the shoulder.
Laurie’s symptoms includes discoloration (see image at left), allodynia, numbness, tingling, sweats, swelling, burning and brittle hair.
Trying Other Pain Management Treatments Without Success
Before discovering scrambler therapy, Laurie tried pain relief treatments including physical therapy and prescription medications. Ultimately she had a spinal cord stimulator ( SCS ) implanted but did not achieve sustained pain relief.
After traveling 3,000 to us for treatment, Laurie and her mother shared her outcome here:
Time for Calmare booster treatments
Depending on the severity of the original neuropathic condition, and length of time the patient has been experiencing chronic pain, periodic booster treatments can be extremely useful against any eventual elevation in pain.
Just shy of three years since her original 10 daily scrambler therapy treatments, Laurie’s CRPS pain was steadily increasing. But this time, she knew what to do. She scheduled booster appointment treatments. (Laurie had 10 treatments, but some patients require as few as a single treatment).
When we opened our pain management clinic this morning and checked our Facebook page, we were delighted to be greeted by an image of her smiling and this message:
Feeling ABSOLUTELY amazing right now!! Best I’ve felt yet!! Thanks Dr Cooney!! You’re my hero!! 😘

Twenty-eight-year-old Chanelle brightened our office during her 10- Calmare Therapy treatments earlier this year. She had been suffering with CRPS for 15 years (yes, it can affect children, teens, adults and seniors) primarily in her upper body, most severely in her left arm).
We started talking back in 2014, and this year she made the arduous 24-hour flight to New Jersey, USA from Australia.
Over the years, she and her loving family had aggressively tried several CRPS pain treatments for her, including:
Myriad of medications
Two spinal cord stimulator (SCS) trials (first traditional then high-frequency)
Finally, in the spring of 2016, Chanelle arrived at our clinic; after her 10-day treatment protocol, she achieved an outstanding outcome, and left us nearly pain-free for the first time in more than a decade.
“So a couple of weeks ago, i flew to Hawaii to see my partner. Since having the Calmare treatment, that has been the best flight experience for me. I’m usually in agonizing pain on the flight, and wonder why it is I torture myself my getting in a plane.
But this time, I sat back and enjoyed watching movies and arrived…relaxed 😊 !! My arm was even good enough for me to hold a gun long enough to shoot at the range… without pain.”
Why Calmare, Why Now?
This young woman’s story means the world to all of us. Every patient who graces our door has tried every drug, invasive and painful treatments and traveled incredible distances in search of pain treatment, only to be disappointed again. Many are (justifiably) on the verge of giving up hope.
But some have discovered our clinic here in New Jersey and their lives, along with their friends and family, have been changed by the success of scrambler therapy. We wish we could say this treatment for everyone and that it is “the cure” for all chronic pain. But, sadly, this isn’t the case. Nonetheless, we continue to achieve better than 80% success in significantly reducing severe chronic pain for people battling post-surgical pain and neuropathy from other chronic medical conditions.
We welcome our opportunity to help you or a loved loved one battling neuropathy, whether you are newly diagnosed or have suffered with chronic pain for decades, as Chanelle has.
Call us (you can ask for me and I’ll call you back) at 201-933-4440 or email me with your medical history. Let’s get a conversation going. Let’s start fighting back.
Dianne came to us from Texas suffering from full-body RSD.
She was initially injured as a child and has been suffering with chronic pain for decades.
Despite her serious healthcare challenges, Dianne was able to earn her Registered Nurse (RN) degree while she experienced some remission.
But following back surgery in 2000, the RSD flared its ugly head yet again.
Over the years, Dianne underwent several different therapies and tried various prescribed medications to help lessen the pain.
A long history of unsuccessful neuropathic pain treatments
As most RSD patients can confirm, these efforts were unfortunately unsuccessful. Dianne had repeated nerve blocks, Ketamine, not-one-but-two spinal stimulators impanted, an implanted drug pump and used several powerful medications, to no avail.
Equally frustrating, the side effects from all the prescribed drugs opened the door to listlessness, weight gain, depression, too much sleep and/or insomnia.
But even while ensuring all these obstacles, with the support of her family, she didn’t give up looking for pain and symptom relief.
Using her own health and medical education expertise, she never stopped searching for new RSD treatments to help overcome her increasingly severe symptoms.
Two women worlds apart find common ground with chronic pain
Michelle shares her Calmare Therapy NJ story here:
After many texts and emails back and forth, Dianne and her husband decided to make the long 3,000 mile trip to New Jersey where she underwent ten 30-minute scrambler therapy treatments each day.
Steadily, her pain began to decrease and each day, the pain relief lasted for longer periods of time.
She told Dr. Cooney she really couldn’t describe what she felt as her pain began to diminish because it had been so long since she had experienced any relief.
An ‘astonished’ Texan finally achieves RSD pain relief
Earlier this week, Dianne completed her treatments and reported an “astonished” 0 pain level upon her departure. She also significantly reduced her medication needs.
Because of the long-term severity of her condition, Dianne may need to return periodically for booster treatments. We’ve advised her to take it easy, sleep at least 8-hours a night, do not “do too much” each day, and slowly get back to enjoying her life again, which she so richly deserves.

When she arrived here for the first time, she had spent the last four years in a wheelchair due to CRPS. (She’s shown here presenting me with a CRPS Warrior Medal for my efforts to help the RSD / CRPS community).
She experienced a pain recurrence and before the pain level elevated, she wisely decided to take action and come in for a few treatments.
Michelle is one of the leaders of a CRPS group in Australia seeking doctors there who are willing to obtain the proper training and begin offering Calmare scrambler therapy in their country. If anyone can get this job done, she will!
Until then, she and her loved ones are willing to make the herculean trip here to the U.S. in order to keep her disease–and the pain–under control.
I’m happy to report she left at a 0/1 pain level after three treatments and no longer needing her walking stick.
My support of this machine to treat people battling RSD and CRPS is unrelenting. I’ve seen it restore and improve the lives of so many good people living with chronic pain every day.
Narcotics, injections, spinal cord stimulators and invasive devices simply don’t work, much of the time.
Does it work for everyone? Sadly, no. But we’re going to keep trying, patient by patient.
“Thanks for all you do Dr. Cooney, not just for me, but for all of us. My RSD pain is still at 0, hands and feet still improving from CIPN. Did I mention I planted a garden and mowed the lawn today?”
“If you, or someone you know is experiencing pain from cancer, seriously, look into Calmare. I wouldn’t steer you the wrong way. Dr. Cooney knows what’s up! Dr Michael Cooney, you’re the main man in my book when it comes to Calmare Therapy.”
“A little over a year ago and still pain free! I ran for the first time last week! Thank you Dr. Cooney and Calmare NJ, you gave me my life back!”
“My doctor recommended a spinal cord stimulator as a last resort to help with my CRPS pain. But I researched Calmare and decided to go to Dr. Cooney in NJ for treatment. I had nothing to lose. Ten treatments later, I am going home at a 0 on the pain scale. I am overjoyed.”
Kansas City, MO
“Thanks to you guys, my own Christmas will be filled with joy and celebration as I embark on a new pain-free journey in 2015! Your admirable dedication to healing will always be an inspiration for me.”
“I am really feeling like I have a new lease on life. As strange as it may seem, it took some time to get used to having no pain!”
“Someone I knew who had the same condition recommended I go to NJ for scrambler treatment with Dr. Cooney for my CRPS. Arrived a skeptic..left in so much less pain.”
Mark Stomp (parent of patient)
“We chose Dr. Cooney because he has successfully treated so many people with CRPS. Also, his staff was very nice and inviting and his patients I spoke to had tremendous results. It has been 5 months since my daughter’s treatment and she is still pain free, symptom free, and taking no meds.”
“You just need to try this treatment because it may just give you back the life you enjoyed before CRPS stole it away.”
RSD / RND
“We will always remember and cherish your help in getting our daughter to where we can hug her again!! You are such a special man and healer. God Bless you and may He continue to use you to bring healing and compassion to others!”
