Meet 30 Calmare Therapy NJ Patients on YouTube

October 23, 2018

By Dr. Michael Cooney, Clinical Director, Calmare Therapy NJ USA

Most people who visit our website are already frustrated with the medical community.

They or a loved one are in pain.

Pain medication is not pain management, they have learned firsthand.

But a myriad of painful procedures, surgery and implanted devices have also failed to do their jobs.

Then what?

From unexplained neuropathy after surgery to diabetic neuropathy or pain after chemotherapy , too many people are left with unresolved neuropathy.

And they continue to lead debilitated lives, so unfairly.

I came to this conclusion years ago, which is what compelled me to launch Calmare scrambler, an FDA-cleared alternative therapy here in New Jersey in 2011.

Mayo Clinic Researchers Test Scrambler Therapy for Pain

It has no side effects, is painless to undergo. It’s drug-free. The worst case scenario is that the treatment does not work, which happens.

But in more than 75% of the patients we treat, their pain is significantly reduced–or eliminated.

Watch and listen to the patients for whom we have relieved severe chronic pain over the years–

From 10-year-old children to seniors who had battled neuropathy for decades, you will discover someone who has fought the same battle with pain that you do.

Then, we hope you’ll reach out via the contact form below, by emailing us at calmarenj@gmail.com or calling our clinic at (201) 933-4440.

Preparing for Your Upcoming Calmare Therapy Treatments

April 24, 2017

By Dr. Michael J. Cooney, Clinical Director, Calmare Therapy NJ USA

Treatment Room BestAs we prepare for the busy summer months ahead, I thought it would be a good time to recap how patients and families can optimally prepare for their upcoming Calmare treatments with us here in New Jersey.

The standard treatment protocol is one daily treatment for 10 days (excluding Sunday and some Saturdays) each lasting about 35 minutes each.

Months or years after the treatment series, some people require subsequent booster treatments (generally one up to four treatments). They should also follow the protocol below. (Keep in mind, in most cases, the need for Calmare booster therapy should decrease over time).

Preparing for Your Calmare Therapy
  1. Fill out your New Patient Forms in advance. You can forward them to us by fax (201-933-8159); send them by mail; or scan and email them to calmarenj@gmail.com.
  2. Send or bring along any objective tests (X-rays, EEG, MRI, EMG or cat scans) for our pre-treatment study.
  3. Wean off as many medications (i.e. anticonvulsants and antidepressants) as possible, working in partnership with your prescribing doctor/s. (Note: Each patient case is unique in this regard. I will talk with you personally about your specific medication protocol and how best to manage this issue.)
  4. Do not use any skin lotions 24-hours before or at any time during your treatment cycle.
  5. Wear loose, comfortable clothing; bring some hand-held entertainment to occupy you during each treatment.
  6. Consider keeping a journal about your experience and discuss how you feel each day during therapy.
  7. Make flight and hotel reservations well in advance. We provide a list of lodging options which have received high marks from patients. Ensure the hotel can provide transportation to/from the clinic or recommend a quality taxi service. You may also wish to download the Uber or Lyft apps for affordable transportation services.
  8. Abby Bluteau getting treatment_2015Don’t be nervous!  The treatments are painless and we will be with you every step of the journey!
You are in good hands!

We are a positive and spirited team (as we hope you have heard!) and will be 100% percent certain to make you feel as comfortable as possible from your first visit to your last.

Our collective goal is to significantly lessen your pain and reduce or eliminate reliance on prescription medications or invasive treatments.

We are only a call away

If there is anything we can do to assist you in your preparation, or you have questions, please call us at (201) 933-4440 or email us at CalmareNJ@gmail.com.

Safe travels and we look forward to meeting you soon!

John finally finds pain relief from his PHN (Shingles) with Calmare scrambler therapy

John Willis_5.2015John Willis came to Calmare Therapy New Jersey on May 4, 2015 for treatment of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) as a result of Shingles. He had been suffering for nine long months with a consistent pain level of 8/10.

Eventually, his pain decreased his quality of life—he could not longer drive or do many of the things he enjoyed.

His physician prescribed a number of prescription medications to help manage his pain but they were ineffective.

Mr. Willis was not content to live the rest of his life in this degree of pain. Once it was clear the medications were not going to help, he considered other alternative pain treatments. Through his research, he discovered Dr. Michael Cooney and his success using scrambler therapy.

He consulted with Dr. Cooney and they mutually agreed he was a suitable candidate to undergo the scrambler, which is painless and has no side effects.

John completed the 10-treatment regime and reduced his pain from an 8/10 to a steady 3/10. The good news is he is maintaining this more manageable pain level without using any medications which made him drowsy and just not feeling “like himself.”

Best of all, he can function again and resume his daily routine, including driving his car.

As always, our goal here at Calmare Therapy NJ is to achieve a 0/10 pain level with every patient. But, sometimes, that goal cannot be achieved. However, in John’s case, since his scrambler therapy treatment, his pain rate varies between 1 but does not go above a 3.

To Mr. Willis, this is a great success.

PHN Clinical Trial Results Using Calmare Scrambler Therapy

But don’t just take our word for this success. Here’s what researchers have found in clinical trials:

Dr. Thomas Smith, director of Palliative Care at the Sydney Kimmel Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins University, performed a study for PHN patients where they achieved an amazing 95% reduction in pain a month after the treatment with no side effects.

Journal of pain and symptom managementAnother study recently published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management with 52 random pain participants compared guideline-based drug management with the scrambler. The Calmare participants had a 91 percent reduction in pain compared to a 28 percent reduction in pain for those who used drug management.

ACOS• The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) completed a clinical trial on the benefits of scrambler therapy:

“Scrambler therapy appears to have a promising effect on post herpetic neuropathy (PHN) with prompt and continued relief and no side effects.”

Are you or someone you care about living with severe pain from PHN?

Feel free to leave your information below and we’ll be happy to provide you with more information. We can also discuss your medical history and mutually determine if scrambler therapy might be right for you.

Another shingles — post hepetic neuralgia — patient has great outcome after Calmare Therapy

shinglesIt’s been another fruitful week here in the trenches of the war on chronic pain. You might recall about six months ago I treated Joan from New York,  a former pharma executive, for post herpetic neuralgia ( PHN ) or shingles, and she experienced a very positive outcome after Calmare Therapy.  She generously wrote a letter about her experience, from a patient point-of-view, which she generously allowed us to publish.

This week, I began treating a male patient in his 70’s, a former physics professor, interestingly, presenting with PHN as well.  He has been suffering with this disease and the ensuing chronic pain since 2007.

When he arrived Monday, his pain level was an 8 to 9 on his right flank.  His stated goal was to ultimately reduce his pain to level 2.  Following today’s treatment (#5), he stated the pain level went from a 4/5 (Friday pre-treatment) to a 1/2 for the first time.  He and his wife were elated, to say the least. And this is only the first week of his 10-treatment scrambler therapy regime.

Coincidentally, the Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center in Baltimore just published results from their own study using Calmare to alleviate pain specifically for PHN pain and and reported an outstanding  95 percent reduction in pain for these patients. Their researchers called for additional testing based upon these promising results. You can read about this study, published by the  National Institutes of Health, here:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23838448?dopt=Abstract

As for my patient, I expect his pain may creep up a bit over the weekend but he has five more treatments scheduled for next week.  We all have high hopes for even more good news ahead.

Wishing everyone a relaxing, low pain weekend.

Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) patient conducts exhaustive research on drug-free pain treatment and finally discovers relief with Calmare Therapy

(For privacy purposes, Joan prefers to publish her first name only).
anon woman in silhouetteJoan’s education and livelihood has been centered in the field of healthcare. She earned degrees in health science as well as a nursing degree (RN). Her career spans more than 30 years working as an executive in a pharmaceutical company and in private consulting.

In 2005, she was diagnosed with shingles and has suffered from post hepatic neuropathy (PHN) ever since. Joan was not content to simply take pain medications for the rest of her life (the dosages were high and she experienced unpleasant side effects). Below, Joan shares firsthand how her discovery of Calmare Therapy finally lessened her chronic neuropathy and improved her quality of life exponentially.

Joan’s Story
“I left no stone unturned in my search for relief from PHN’s severe nerve shocks that strike at any given time. The symptoms that I suffer from are intensive nerve pain shocks that happen almost nonstop and painful skin sensitivity (allodynia) that renders me unable to wear certain fabrics or allow anyone to touch the affected side of my back. It becomes very hard to relax and the pain causes me to hold a lot of stress in my body. I was an out-patient at a renowned New York City pain center for a number of years where I was prescribed many different pain medications; underwent several painful and invasive nerve block procedures and even tried deep brain stimulation treatments. Sad to say, none of these efforts resulted in any significant improvement in my pain.

At the onset of my illness, I was prescribed Lyrica and the dosage gradually crept up until I was taking 600mg, much higher than the recommended daily dosage of 300mg. I was on this regime for a couple of years. Then I changed physicians and was prescribed a compounded topical cream in addition to the Lyrica. This medication regimen offered me some relief, but if I missed a dose or did not apply the cream, the pain became very intense. Many nights, the shocks and firings from the nerve damage kept me awake.

Monthly pain management research
Each month since this happened to me, I sit down at my computer and research the latest findings and new therapies for pain neuropathy. When I discovered the clinical trial results for Calmare Therapy, published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Continue reading “Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) patient conducts exhaustive research on drug-free pain treatment and finally discovers relief with Calmare Therapy”
