Laurie’s Calmare Booster Treatments Tame CRPS Pain and Physical Symptoms

October 3, 2018

crps treatment

We welcomed back chronic pain warrior, Laurie Mounts, who traveled 3,000 miles from the U.S. Northwest to undergo Calmare booster treatments.

Warriors like this young woman are why we do what we do.

Her unrelenting will to win the CRPS war is an inspiration to all of us.

Laurie has battled a lengthy and severe battle with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) for 10 long years, after a simple fall on the stairs in 2008.

CRPS Can Be More Than Just Severe Chronic Pain

While she aggressively tried prescription medications and other neuropathic pain treatments, they were unsuccessful in reducing her high pain level and associated CRPS symptoms:

Calmare Treatment for CRPS
Allodynia
  • Allodynia
  • Neuropathic pain up to 9/10
  • Skin discoloration
  • Skin tingling, sweats and burning
  • Inability to achieve sustained sleep
  • Brittle hair

Over time, her RSD condition spread from her ankles up to her shoulders, resulting in full body CRPS.

She came to us in 2014 as a last-ditch effort to garner some much-needed relief.

Her outcome was remarkable.

Laurie and her mother Ruth describe her medical history during their first visit to Calmare Therapy NJ USA in 2014.

Calmare scrambler therapy is drug-free, painless and has no side effects. It has been FDA-cleared for nearly a decade.

Laurie Battles Back When Chronic Pain Levels Increase

Due to the longevity and severity of Laurie’s CRPS condition, the disease symptoms slowly returned. In late September 2018,  Laurie and her family returned to New Jersey for additional therapy sessions (boosters) to reduce pain and related symptoms.

After several treatments, Laurie posted this message, which we are sharing with her permission:

“Well, it’s the end of my time here on the East Coast.

I’m currently having my final Calmare booster treatment.

Knowing I can come here to get relief from this pain is so helpful! I don’t know what I would have done without them in my life!

Thank you for all you guys do for all of us CRPS warriors!

I’m so thankful for Doc Cooney and all he does to help with my (and so many others) pain.

He definitely goes above and beyond for his patients.

I’m also so thankful for all of my friends and family for the prayers and thoughts as we’ve battled this disease through the years.

I wouldn’t have made it without you! 🧡🧡

Dr. Michael Cooney is one of only seven Calmare-Certified providers in the United States. He has successfully treated (eliminated or significantly reduced chronic pain) for nearly 500 patients from around the world.

U.S. Army Soldier Finds Relief from Full Body CRPS

October 9, 2017

We were honored to meet and provide Calmare scrambler therapy treatment for Jay Szymczak a few weeks ago.

Jay underwent two back surgeries while in the Army, eventually resulting in CRPS, which spread throughout his body. Those of you suffering with this monster will appreciate his description of the type of pain he endured for years.

Eventually forced to retire from the Military, he discovered Calmare after performing research on newer alternative pain management treatments with his wife after pain medications, medical cannabis and a plethora of invasive treatments still left him in debilitating pain.

“Jay’s treatment outcome reminds us why we continue to fight this fight every single day,” says Calmare Clinical Director Dr. Michael Cooney, who treated Jay. “He’s a wonderful husband and father who served his country proudly. He certainly deserves to live pain-free.”

Jay sums it up best in his video below. “I have my life back.”

Full Body RSD Warrior Makes a Video of her Calmare Experience

February 2, 2017

True to her promise, Sara delighted us with her video recap of the 10 Calmare Therapy treatments she had with us here in New Jersey in January 2017.

A 21-year-old dynamo, we can only imagine what life has in store for her now that her RSD pain and related symptoms are under control (after 5 1/2 long  years of suffering).

Want to hear about Calmare from a ‘user perspective?’

Click below (and thank you so much Sara 🙂

Sara’s Full-Body CRPS Reduced to a 0 Pain Level After Calmare Therapy

January 19, 2017

sara-meyer_1-2017After sustaining a bone bruise in 2011, 21-year-old Sara was eventually diagnosed with CRPS, which progressed to full body CRPS as the years progressed and her treatment efforts were unsuccessful.

She sought treatment from outstanding healthcare providers, including the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where she underwent several rounds of physical therapy and occupational therapy.

But her pain level, ranging from 4 to 9 /10, persisted.

She also battled additional RSD symptoms including:

  • Skin discoloration
  • Allodynia (pain that results from a stimulus that is not normally painful, like a piece of light fabric grazing the skin)
  • Intermittent tingling sensations
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Sensitivity to temperature changes

Dr. Michael Cooney Performs 10 Calmare Therapy Treatments

Sara heard about Dr. Cooney online and watched Calmare NJ USA  patient reviews on YouTube, particularly cases which involved people battling full body CRPS.

She had already tried traditional medical treatments without success; from her perspective, it was time to try an alternative pain management solution.

In early January 2017, Sara arrived here in New Jersey and began daily treatments which lasted about 35-minutes each. Her therapy sessions were set for the same time each day. She started feeling less pain after the first treatment, which occurs more often than you might expect.

By session number five, her physical symptoms began to diminish, the span of time her pain was lessened grew longer, and her overall pain level continued to decrease.

Last Friday, the college student completed her treatment series and left at a 0 /

10, pain-free, for the first time in years. But that’s not all–all of Sara’s additional physical symptoms (noted above) were also eliminated.

“Sara’s case was a textbook outcome that we pray every Calmare patient experiences,” says Dr.

Cooney. “She had been in pain from CRPS for six years since a minor injury derailed her life. I could not be happier with her outcome.”

Sara has kindly offered to create a video review of her Calmare experience. But, for now, she’s focusing on getting back to school, socializing with friends and living the full life that any 20-something young woman deserves.

Are You Batting CRPS or RSD?

Our clinical director, Dr. Michael Cooney, and his partner, Robert Kelly, MD, have successfully treated hundreds of children, teens, adults and seniors with this debilitating chronic disease. But it is not right for everyone, nor does it always provide the outcome that Sara experienced, unfortunately.

But countless patients have been able to “get their lives back again” and resume living pain-free, or live with a significantly reduced, sustained level of pain.

Kelly Toler Visits for a Calmare Booster Treatment

October 12, 2016

You may recall Kelly came to us from Texas a year ago after hearing about Dr. Cooney’s success using Calmare to treat CRPS. At that time, she had been debilitated by severe pain for nearly seven long years. As a busy wife and mother with young children, she refused to give up finding a solution to make her pain manageable.

Just shy of a year since her successful treatment series, Kelly is back with us this week for booster treatments, to reduce her pain level.

She shared this post on our timeline just before arriving here in New Jersey:

“CRPS has the nicknamed the ‘suicide disease’ and I know exactly why (and it sucks that I know kelly-tolar_10-16_boosterthis).  I have been through many of the treatments they discuss in the CRPS documentary, “Trial By Fire,” including a 4-day ketamine infusion treatment, which was a very, very hard treatment to go through…

If you, or anyone you know, if suffering from this disease, please reach out and contact Calmare NJ and see if Calmare therapy is right for you!

It has done amazing things to change my live and the chronic pain path I have been on for over 8 years now.

I will never be 💯 percent pain-free, but to be able to be even close to that is all I could ask for!! Looking forward to seeing you Dr. Cooney on Wednesday!!”

Calmare Booster Treatments

Depending on the severity of the original condition, and the length of time the patient has been experiencing chronic pain, periodic booster treatments may be needed to combat any return of pain. Many Calmare patients never need further therapy, but in RSD cases and other conditions resulting in prolonged chronic pain, boosters can be extremely useful.

Some patients only require one booster treatment, others require up to three, on average.

Sixteen-year-old Battling RSD Achieves 0 Pain Level After Three Years

Danielle and her best friend.
Danielle and her best friend.

August 1, 2016

“My daughter missed about 75 percent of the last two school years,” says Marlo Payne, a registered nurse from update New York. “Her full body RSD had just taken over her life.” Danielle was diagnosed with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) after a bunionectomy performed in 2013. The burning pain started in her toes and eventually spread to the top of her head.

Danielle said the burning pain was so severe she eventually felt ‘her brain sizzling.’ The Payne family mobilized and aggressively sought out a range of RSD treatment efforts:

  • Physical therapy
  • Epidurals
  • Surgery
  • Prescribed painkillers and opioids

With no significant success, and Danielle’s pain actively spreading, the family eventually traveled to the Cleveland Clinic so that Danielle could receive inpatient care in their widely regarded pain management physical therapy program.

Where do you turn after many chronic pain treatment efforts fail?

“We were all terribly disappointed when Danielle didn’t respond to this intensive treatment. I

Marlo Payne with Cathy_7.16

thought—what else can we do?” Her father Dan took matters into his own hands and began researching new RSD treatments online. He discovered Dr. Michael Cooney who uses Calmare Therapy (scrambler therapy) to lessen or even alleviate several kinds of neuropathic pain, particularly RSD / CRPS.

Best of all, this FDA-cleared treatment is painless, completely drug-free and has no side effects.

“By this time, Danielle was experiencing skin discoloration, unbearable pain and often relied on crutches or a wheelchair to get around. It was that bad,” Marlo recalls. Much to her surprise, when she initially called Calmare Therapy NJ, Barbara and Cathy immediately put her through to speak with Dr. Cooney.

“We talked about Danielle’s case, her previous treatment efforts and the severity of her condition. I wanted him to be fully aware of how bad her situation was,” Marlo explains. After talking with the doctor, she told her daughter’s best friend to pack up for a two-week stay in New Jersey to keep Danielle company during Calmare scrambler therapy treatment.

Danielle Arrives in New Jersey to Try Calmare Therapy

When she arrived, Danielle’s pain was a constant 10/10 on the Pain Scale. After her first treatment, however, Danielle felt some relief, estimating her pain was reduced to about an 8. With each daily treatment session, lasting about 35 minutes, her pain continued to decrease.

By treatment #7, the teen’s pain was down to a 2/10. By treatment #10, Danielle was pain-free for the first time in nearly three years.

Life after Calmare Therapy

Danielle Payne and friends_7.16Now back home and resuming a normal life for the first time in three years, Marlo says the whole family is still in a state of shock. “We’ve been consumed with this monster for so many years and to have it suddenly wiped away, well, we still can’t quite believe it,” Marlo says with a smile.

This relieved mother says that Danielle won’t go back to playing all the sports she loves, for now, but that full-time high school is definitely on the agenda. “Danielle was understandably depressed, being removed from a normal teenager’s social life due to the pain, but that’s no longer the case. She really has a second chance at life now.”

A few words about Dr. Michael Cooney

The Payne family also has kind words for Dr. Cooney and his team’s care:  He’s humble about his skill and he’s a straight-shooter, which I appreciate. He doesn’t sugar-coat and tells it like it is.”

Marlo says that families struggling with chronic pain should ‘make the phone call’ to Dr. Cooney.

“Study the information on their website and then speak to him about your situation. Dr. Cooney will be truthful, informative and candid with you. This machine may very well change your life. What are you waiting for?”

The Calmare Connection Joins Two Women from Texas and Australia with RSD

November 13, 2015

BlackburnDianne came to us from Texas suffering from full-body RSD.

She was initially injured as a child and has been suffering with chronic pain for decades.

Despite her serious healthcare challenges, Dianne was able to earn her Registered Nurse (RN) degree while she experienced some remission.

But following back surgery in 2000, the RSD flared its ugly head yet again.

Over the years, Dianne underwent several different therapies and tried various prescribed medications to help lessen the pain.

A long history of unsuccessful neuropathic pain treatments

As most RSD patients can confirm, these efforts were unfortunately unsuccessful. Dianne had repeated nerve blocks, Ketamine, not-one-but-two spinal stimulators impanted, an implanted drug pump and used several powerful medications, to no avail.

Equally frustrating, the side effects from all the prescribed drugs opened the door to listlessness, weight gain, depression, too much sleep and/or insomnia.

But even while ensuring all these obstacles, with the support of her family, she didn’t give up looking for pain and symptom relief.

Using her own health and medical education expertise, she never stopped searching for new RSD treatments to help overcome her increasingly severe symptoms.

Two women worlds apart find common ground with chronic pain

From Texas, she connected online with our patient Michelle, who had a similar medical history, who had traveled from Australia to New Jersey for Calmare scrambler therapy RSD treatments and sustained an outstanding patient outcome.

Michelle shares her Calmare Therapy NJ story here:

Calmare Technology 2012After many texts and emails back and forth, Dianne and her husband decided to make the long 3,000 mile trip to New Jersey where she underwent ten 30-minute scrambler therapy treatments each day.

Steadily, her pain began to decrease and each day, the pain relief lasted for longer periods of time.

She told Dr. Cooney she really couldn’t describe what she felt as her pain began to diminish because it had been so long since she had experienced any relief.

An ‘astonished’ Texan finally achieves RSD pain relief

Earlier this week, Dianne completed her treatments and reported an “astonished” 0 pain level upon her departure. She also significantly reduced her medication needs.

Because of the long-term severity of her condition, Dianne may need to return periodically for booster treatments. We’ve advised her to take it easy, sleep at least 8-hours a night, do not  “do too much” each day, and slowly get back to enjoying her life again, which she so richly deserves.

The mother of a child with CRPS shares a wonderful compliment after Calmare scrambler therapy

Abby Bluteau_6.2015Some weeks ago, we welcomed Danielle and her 13-year-old daughter, Abby.

She arrived in a wheelchair due to the effects of CRPS after a knee injury.

Abby’s pain was spreading  throughout the left side of her body and her family worried she was approaching full body  RSD.

It was a true Herculean effort for this mother and daughter to make the trip here to New Jersey, make no mistake.

The scrambler therapy goal

Our mission was simple:

Curtail the pain (which was a consistent 8-10) so that Abby could walk again.

Ten Calmare treatments later…

Unlike some patients, Abby didn’t experience significant pain reduction after the first few scrambler therapy treatments.

But we pressed on.

After treatment 5, we had a breakthrough and her pain began to decrease and last for longer periods of time.

By the end of her 10-treatment cycle, Abby left us without needing the wheelchair–just two weeks later.

Abby’s Calmare treatment was performed without:

  • drugs
  • side effects
  • any significant pain during the treatment

Abby is continuing to walk and regain the strength in her legs. While she sometimes uses a walker for support, she continues to improve (under the watchful eye of a great mom, which never hurts 😉

Danielle shared this acknowledgement on Facebook and kindly permitted us to share it here with you:

“If you or a family member have CRPS and don’t know what the machine in this picture is or who the doctor pictured with my daughter is you need to be informed. Check out Calmare Therapy. My recommendation hands down! My daughter was in a wheelchair unable to even stand on her own and is now able to walk with her walker and is gaining every day.

Calmare Therapy is changing our lives and giving my child her life back!
