The Calmare Connection Joins Two Women from Texas and Australia with RSD

November 13, 2015

BlackburnDianne came to us from Texas suffering from full-body RSD.

She was initially injured as a child and has been suffering with chronic pain for decades.

Despite her serious healthcare challenges, Dianne was able to earn her Registered Nurse (RN) degree while she experienced some remission.

But following back surgery in 2000, the RSD flared its ugly head yet again.

Over the years, Dianne underwent several different therapies and tried various prescribed medications to help lessen the pain.

A long history of unsuccessful neuropathic pain treatments

As most RSD patients can confirm, these efforts were unfortunately unsuccessful. Dianne had repeated nerve blocks, Ketamine, not-one-but-two spinal stimulators impanted, an implanted drug pump and used several powerful medications, to no avail.

Equally frustrating, the side effects from all the prescribed drugs opened the door to listlessness, weight gain, depression, too much sleep and/or insomnia.

But even while ensuring all these obstacles, with the support of her family, she didn’t give up looking for pain and symptom relief.

Using her own health and medical education expertise, she never stopped searching for new RSD treatments to help overcome her increasingly severe symptoms.

Two women worlds apart find common ground with chronic pain

From Texas, she connected online with our patient Michelle, who had a similar medical history, who had traveled from Australia to New Jersey for Calmare scrambler therapy RSD treatments and sustained an outstanding patient outcome.

Michelle shares her Calmare Therapy NJ story here:

Calmare Technology 2012After many texts and emails back and forth, Dianne and her husband decided to make the long 3,000 mile trip to New Jersey where she underwent ten 30-minute scrambler therapy treatments each day.

Steadily, her pain began to decrease and each day, the pain relief lasted for longer periods of time.

She told Dr. Cooney she really couldn’t describe what she felt as her pain began to diminish because it had been so long since she had experienced any relief.

An ‘astonished’ Texan finally achieves RSD pain relief

Earlier this week, Dianne completed her treatments and reported an “astonished” 0 pain level upon her departure. She also significantly reduced her medication needs.

Because of the long-term severity of her condition, Dianne may need to return periodically for booster treatments. We’ve advised her to take it easy, sleep at least 8-hours a night, do not  “do too much” each day, and slowly get back to enjoying her life again, which she so richly deserves.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and United Healthcare Continue to Add Calmare Coverage

medical insurance cardMay 5, 2015

We continue to share medical insurance coverage information with you as we receive reliable information from our scrambler therapy colleagues across the country.

It is important to note that every insurance policy is unique and that coverage will vary according to the employer’s criteria.

HOW DO I FIND OUT IF I HAVE MEDICAL COVERAGE FOR CALMARE SCRAMBLER THERAPY?

Call the Member phone number located on the back of your card and speak specifically with a live person about your plan’s “Coverage.”

Tell them the CPT code you are calling about is 0278T.

The representative should tell you if it is a covered service and how you can obtain pre-certification. Here at Calmare Therapy NJ, our administrative team will be happy to provide you with any documentation your insurer may require.

Contact your insurance company before you proceed with treatment, if possible.

ANTHEM BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD

As of May 2015, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, a federation of 37 separate United States health insurance organizations and companies, has provided some degree of coverage for the treatment of several chronic pain conditions using Calmare scrambler therapy.

We have confirmed reports of coverage by these specific Anthem BCBS companies:

BCBS of Indiana

BCBS of Kentucky

BCBS of Missouri

BCBS of Ohio

BCBS of Wisconsin

BCBS of Minnesota

BCBS of North Carolina

United Healthcare

We have several confirmed patient reports of coverage approval based upon the specific use of CPT Code 0278T.

Make no mistake, we’re not there yet. At the same time, we’re happy to begin to see some light at the end of the tunnel where some medical insurers are recognizing the cost benefit and effectiveness of Calmare’s scrambler therapy in comparison to:

  •  Exorbitantly expensive medications
  •  Invasive in-patient chronic pain treatments such as Ketamine therapy and spinal cord stimulators (SCS).

Meanwhile, we will keep fighting, getting the word out and getting patients to stand up to insurance companies and demand attend. This is a fight we are not going to surrender any time soon, rest assured.

Calmare is a “provider dependent” therapy. Know your provider.

By Dr. Michael J. Cooney, Clinical Director, Calmare Therapy NJ

Calmare Certified Location LogoI’ve received several patient queries about the expertise of the healthcare professional who is actually performing the therapy (using their expertise to attach the leads to the patient in the optimal location-based upon the injury and pain region):camare foot image with leads

I’d like to touch on the importance of this question today─

Calmare is a “provider dependent” therapy

The scrambler therapy is performed by a “provider,” a specially-trained clinician who places each of the leads on the patient, sets the voltage, monitors response minute-by-minute and day-by-day, and makes ongoing adjustments based upon the patient’s response. In my practice, I am the provider, 100 percent of the time, from start to finish ─ no exceptions.

The Calmare administering healthcare professional must have extensive expertisetraining and understanding to accurately diagnose the precise location of the pain site/s.

This can be easier said than done.

Why? Because the placement of the leads (patches) which are attached to each of the algorithms must be precisely placed in order to alleviate pain. If these leads are placed in the wrong area, this lessens the overall capability of the Calmare MC-5A technology to optimally perform its job. I have served as a Trainer for the treatment for some new doctors introducing Calmare, and it is a responsibility I take very seriously.

What to look for in your Calmare provider

The most experienced Calmare Therapy providers have received a careful review and on-site examination by the company’s administrators who may or may not designate the top providers as Calmare Certified. I strongly encourage you to seek out these providers for your therapy. Secondly, ask the provider you are considering how many patients they have treated with your specific chronic pain condition ─ back and neck pain, post surgical pain, RSD / CRPS / fibromyalgia, pain after chemotherapy, diabetic neuropathy, etc.

Your Calmare technology will be most successful when your chosen provider has advanced expertise in the placement of each lead. In my opinion, this vitally important task should only be administered by a healthcare professional specifically trained in the diagnosis and treatment of several types of advanced neuropathy.

As a reminder, I talk with patient living with severe, treatment-resistant chronic pain every day. Sometimes I recommend Calmare, sometimes other treatment is recommended. Regardless, I’m always happy to offer advice or my opinion. Feel free to call my office at (201) 933-444zero.

Introducing Calmare NJ’s Patient-2-Patient Program

Offered Exclusively at Calmare Therapy NJ

Many people living with severe chronic pain have tried a myriad of medications, invasive procedures and even alternative treatments without success.

But Calmare Therapy is an FDA-cleared, painless, drug-free scrambler therapy that is truly different.

And our patients want to tell you about it.

The “P2P” Program at Calmare NJ:

Now you can get firsthand information about Calmare from other patients just like you. If you are considering Calmare scrambler therapy treatment, we will put you in touch with one of our patient volunteers who was previously treated for the same  neuropathic condition. By phone, email or other private social media resource, you can share your concerns, ask questions, get informed. (Our patient volunteers are not compensated).

It’s that simple. More than 80 percent of the patients we have treated are
pain-free or have reduced the depth of pain significantly. Now these patients want to “pay-it-forward” to others just like them.

Come in and try Calmare with no obligation:

Come in to Calmare NJ and undergo a full treatment (40 to 60 minutes). Many patients actually experience a lessening of pain on the first treatment. If you choose to undergo the remaining nine treatments, this treatment will count as your first of 10 Calmare sessions. If you decide it is not for you, there is no charge for the treatment or the private consultation with one of our doctors.

Next Steps:

Call us at (201) 933-4440 or just complete the Information Form (below) and we’ll put you in touch with one of our doctors who will talk with you about your medical history, medication usage and other therapies you have tried.

If we mutually determine you may respond positively to Calmare scrambler therapy, we’ll put you in touch with one of our patients diagnosed with the same or similar medical condition. Then you can find out, from an actual patient’s point-of-view, how Calmare can make your life so much better.

Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) patient conducts exhaustive research on drug-free pain treatment and finally discovers relief with Calmare Therapy

(For privacy purposes, Joan prefers to publish her first name only).
anon woman in silhouetteJoan’s education and livelihood has been centered in the field of healthcare. She earned degrees in health science as well as a nursing degree (RN). Her career spans more than 30 years working as an executive in a pharmaceutical company and in private consulting.

In 2005, she was diagnosed with shingles and has suffered from post hepatic neuropathy (PHN) ever since. Joan was not content to simply take pain medications for the rest of her life (the dosages were high and she experienced unpleasant side effects). Below, Joan shares firsthand how her discovery of Calmare Therapy finally lessened her chronic neuropathy and improved her quality of life exponentially.

Joan’s Story
“I left no stone unturned in my search for relief from PHN’s severe nerve shocks that strike at any given time. The symptoms that I suffer from are intensive nerve pain shocks that happen almost nonstop and painful skin sensitivity (allodynia) that renders me unable to wear certain fabrics or allow anyone to touch the affected side of my back. It becomes very hard to relax and the pain causes me to hold a lot of stress in my body. I was an out-patient at a renowned New York City pain center for a number of years where I was prescribed many different pain medications; underwent several painful and invasive nerve block procedures and even tried deep brain stimulation treatments. Sad to say, none of these efforts resulted in any significant improvement in my pain.

At the onset of my illness, I was prescribed Lyrica and the dosage gradually crept up until I was taking 600mg, much higher than the recommended daily dosage of 300mg. I was on this regime for a couple of years. Then I changed physicians and was prescribed a compounded topical cream in addition to the Lyrica. This medication regimen offered me some relief, but if I missed a dose or did not apply the cream, the pain became very intense. Many nights, the shocks and firings from the nerve damage kept me awake.

Monthly pain management research
Each month since this happened to me, I sit down at my computer and research the latest findings and new therapies for pain neuropathy. When I discovered the clinical trial results for Calmare Therapy, published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Continue reading “Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) patient conducts exhaustive research on drug-free pain treatment and finally discovers relief with Calmare Therapy”

July 16, 2012

Thought you would like to know that Jamie is still going strong with zero pain after 22 weeks !!

We just returned from a week at a lake and he water-skied and innertubed and kayaked and had a blast.  Much better than last summer when he could only watch…  Thanks again for giving him his life back,  Joan.

Philly Dad and Ohio Mom end their children’s RSD pain with Calmare

March 26, 2012

During the past month, we’ve met some remarkable patients from around the U.S. who have come here to Rutherford for Calmare Therapy. The past few years for the Bailor and Schmidt families have been fraught with worry, frustration and medical bills. Their children contracted reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) and their parents dedicated every available moment to finding a solution to end their children’s chronic pain.

Words cannot describe how gratifying and heartwarming it has been to see these children respond so positively to Calmare treatment. These wonderful kids went back home pain free (0 pain level)  and quickly stepped back into the lives they had left behind due to chronic RSD pain. Thank you to both families who so generously shared their personal stories with us.  They did so hoping that their stories would reach other parents in the same situation.

Kaitlyn Bailor – 16-years-old          J. Schmidt – 12-years old
