Deb Balzano Describes Her CRPS Onset and How She Fought Back

July 21, 2017

Deb Balzano of New Jersey experienced an intensifying burning and stabbing sensation months after a foot surgery.

She explains how CRPS, a condition she had never heard of, soon took over her life, and how she and her husband battled back.

Star Describes her Calmare Therapy Treatment Outcome for CRPS Pain

May 4, 2017

Star and her husband arrived here from Maine a few weeks ago. Seven long years ago, Star sustained a left hand injury, eventually resulting in CRPS, which spread to her whole body, taking away her independence and quality of life.

For those of you suffering from RSD /  CRPS, this story may sound all too familiar…

Star talks about her Calmare scrambler therapy treatments below and kindly allowed us to share her recent Facebook post, where she described her medical history and eventual treatment outcome after 10 scrambler therapy treatments, performed by CRPS specialist, Dr. Michael Cooney, clinical director.

Facebook update by Star on May 1, 2017:

“I want to share my journey through RSD/CRPS.

I was injured in my left hand/wrist, which started me on this path through a very lonely hell for the past 7 years. Soon after my injury, I developed RSD/CRPS in my left hand/wrist. Over time, it spread to entire body involvement.

I lost so much during this time like my independence, job, friends, sense of self, and very importantly I lost my will to live. The burning pain and stabbing hurt so bad that no conventional medication or therapy was helping.

I have been through years of physical & occupational therapy, pool therapy, mirror therapy, trigger point injections, 5 stellate ganglion blocks in my neck, HBOT therapy, over a dozen specialists, numerous nerve conduction testing, and the list goes on and on…

I was even considering spinal cord stimulation or Ketamine Coma therapy. Both not FDA approved and extremely invasive procedures.

I am very fortunate that I have an amazing husband, family and close friends that wouldn’t give up on me but more importantly they wouldn’t let me give up on myself and life.

My husband found Dr. Michael Cooney in Rutherford NJ who performs Calmare Scrambler Therapy. I had never heard of this procedure and we did lots of research into it and Dr. Cooney.

I called Dr. Cooney’s office and spoke at length with his staff member, Cathy, and she was so helpful and kind answering all my questions and helping me be at ease about going in for this therapy.

We arrived at the clinic and were immediately greeted by Cathy, Barbara and Dr. Cooney. Up until this point, I was feeling optimistically hopeful that this would be the treatment that finally worked for me. I arrived at the clinic with a 8-10+ pain scale for the past several years–with little to no relief.

After just one treatment, I was already feeling a tiny bit better. Each day, I gradually felt less pain and RSD/CRPS symptoms. (Resting between treatments and for 7-10 days after treatment ends is key to healing).

I left treatment after the 10 sessions feeling like an entire new lease on life had just been gifted to me. My pain levels dropped to a manageable 3-4.

I have been asked if I have been cured and my response is no, this is not a cure, however, it has lessened my pain and symptoms considerably and I am still healing. There is no way to know how long this last , or when and if I would need a booster treatment in the future.

Regardless,  I would do it again and every moment I am not in severe pain and agony, I will always be grateful to those who were a part of my journey and continue to be my special warriors.

I still have a very long road ahead of me in rehabilitation, but now the difference is I have less pain and hope for the future again.

Forever thankful to those who stood by me!!!”

Laura Checks in Six Years After Calmare for RSD & Fibromyalgia

April 7, 2017

Laura is shown walking on grass without excruciating pain for the first time in years after Calmare Therapy (NYC 2011)

We jokingly call Laura from Indiana one of our Calmare Pioneers.

When Dr. Cooney began offering Calmare scrambler therapy in 2011, he intended to use it to help his existing medication and treatment-resistant patients.

But quickly, patients and their families battling neuropathy discovered his success using the MC-5A device to lessen or alleviate several types of treatment-resistant chronic nerve pain.

Laura, a newlywed and special needs school teacher, was severely debilitated by both fibromyalgia and RSD pain and related physical symptoms.

While she was undergoing RSD treatment at the Cleveland Clinic, she saw a post on Facebook by another RSD sufferer which changed her life.

Amanda and Dr. Cooney

Amanda posted that Calmare had given her life back,” Laura recalls. “She wanted to shout to the rooftops to anyone living with chronic pain that there is something out there that truly works.”

Laura and her husband talked and agreed to halt the current treatment regimen and drove to New Jersey to meet with Dr. Michael J. Cooney.

Laura shares a message six years since her scrambler therapy

Today, Dr. Cooney was delighted to see this message on his Facebook timeline from Laura. (Don’t think Dr. Cooney will forget about you after your treatments are complete. He stays in touch with everyone in the ‘Calmare Family.’).

“Dr. Cooney, I saw an old post from 2011 on my ‘Memories for Today’ and of course I thought of you! The Cleveland Clinic ended up telling me that I was, “In denial about my condition. That I would never improve because RSD has no cure.” My prayers for remission were answered when I found you just a few months later! I’m forever grateful.

You have given me the gift of life without pain and it’s been full of joy again!

Laura is one of those young women you wish you could clone, because she’s just a lovely person inside and out.

Thank you for taking a chance on Calmare, Laura, and we appreciate your unrelenting support since your treatment with us in 2011.

Wishing you every happiness, today and always.

Registered Nurse Beth Finally Gets RSD Pain Relief with Calmare Therapy

May 6, 2016

We appreciate when healthcare professionals seek Calmare Therapy, an FDA-cleared treatment to combat many types of neuropathic chronic pain. They have seen firsthand that opioids and invasive treatments may not provide the sustained pain relief they need to achieve a better quality of life.

Beth had managed to work as a nurse in Pennsylvania while silently battling RSD in her foot after a failed surgery. To combat the increasingly severe burning sensation she sustained, she had a spinal cord stimulator implanted, nerve block injections and was prescribed more pain medications than she was willing to take.

But the intensity of the pain only increased over time.

She and her husband discovered Dr. Cooney and his success using Calmare scrambler therapy to treat reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

By the time she arrived for treatment in New Jersey, her pain was a constant 10/10 and she was using a cane for support.

But we’ll let Beth share her story:

It’s that simple. More than 80 percent of the patients we have treated are
