A return of previous neuropathic pain does not necessarily mean your original Scrambler Therapy treatment failed. A timely booster treatment/s can help reinforce your previous pain relief–before symptoms become severe enough to disrupt sleep, mobility and daily life.

After completing a successful course of Scrambler Therapy, many patients experience long-term (or permanent) sustained nerve pain relief without requiring additional treatment.
Sometimes, however, depending on the nature of the original neuropathic condition, others may eventually notice a recurrence of the burning, tingling, electrical pain or skin sensitivity.
If this happens, my most important advice is simple:
Reaching out at the first sustained return of familiar symptoms gives us an opportunity to discuss what has changed, evaluate your current pain pattern and determine whether one or more Scrambler Therapy booster treatments may be appropriate.
What Is a Scrambler Therapy Booster Treatment?

Scrambler Therapy booster treatments—also called Calmare booster treatments—are follow-up sessions provided to patients who responded positively to their original treatment protocol but later experienced an increase in neuropathic pain.
A booster is not automatically another complete 10-treatment series. Some patients may require only one or two sessions, while others benefit from a short series. The appropriate number depends on the underlying condition, severity and duration of the returning pain, response during treatment and other individual clinical factors.
“Do not wait until your nerve pain returns to its previous intensity before contacting us to discuss/consider one or more Scrambler Therapy booster treatments.”
Dr. Jason Cooney, DC – Clinical Director
Published clinical evidence also recognizes the role of follow-up treatment for some people living with chronic pain. A peer-reviewed review of Scrambler Therapy for chronic pain reports that booster sessions may be administered following a relapse and that, for some patients, one or two sessions can reestablish the earlier benefit.
In a randomized pilot study of chronic neuropathic pain, retreatment and maintenance therapy provided significant relief for the majority of patients who experienced recurrent symptoms.
Do Not Wait for Mild Nerve Pain to Become Severe Again
Patients sometimes hesitate to take action because their returning pain is “not bad enough yet.”
Others hope the symptoms will disappear on their own or assume that needing a booster means Scrambler Therapy stopped working.
That is not necessarily the case.
Chronic neuropathic conditions can fluctuate, and pain may increase following physical overexertion, emotional stress, illness, weather changes or reinjury—sometimes without an identifiable trigger.
Begin documenting when the pain returned, where you feel it, whether it is intermittent or constant and what may have preceded it. Our patient-personalized Scrambler Therapy post-treatment guidelines provide additional guidance about monitoring symptoms and protecting the progress achieved during treatment.
Early contact does not automatically mean you need another session. It allows us to evaluate the change before pain escalates and begins interfering significantly with walking, working, sleeping or participating in everyday activities.
Booster Treatment Success Stories
The value of ongoing pain-management follow-up is reflected in the experiences of our own patients.

Abby has lived with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) since she was a teenager and traveled from Vermont to New Jersey for periodic follow-up care since she began successful pain management treatment with us in 2014.
As recently as 2026, she completed five booster treatments and returned home pain-free to her daughter.

Ethan, a teenage CRPS patient from Pennsylvania, returned to our clinic after his nerve pain increased to 8 out of 10. Following four booster sessions, Ethan completed treatment pain-free.
Mayo Clinic has also documented a patient who maintained relief from severe peripheral neuropathy with occasional follow-up Scrambler Therapy treatments.
These individual outcomes do not guarantee that every patient will respond in the same way. They do demonstrate why continued communication and individualized follow-up matter.
