Calmare: Non-Invasive Pain Management for Pediatric Chronic Pain

June 10, 2020

adolescent with chronic pain

Few things are harder for a parent than being unable to reduce chronic pain for a child living with neuropathy. Parents often resort to giving their children powerful opioids, desperate to lessen their discomfort.

As parents, we all feel that if we could take on the pain our children have, we would do so gladly.

But we can’t.

Parents of children battling medication and treatment-resistant chronic pain live with this challenge daily.

Estimates suggest that anywhere between 5 and 38% of children live with chronic pain. It not only affects their quality of life and that of their parents, but also increases the likelihood of this becoming a lifelong issue.

More than 70% of children and teens who live with chronic pain will go on to struggle with it in adulthood.

At Calmare Therapy NJ USA, we have treated more than 100 children, from ages 8 to 18.

“A common hurdle children with chronic pain face is the invisible nature of neuropathy and a child’s understandable difficulty describing their pain and level of pain,” says Dr. Michael Cooney, clinical director.

Why non-invasive Calmare is ideal for pediatric neuropathy

  • FDA-cleared510(k)-cleared and European CE mark-certified
  • Pain-free treatment
  • Non-invasive (no injections, IV’s, outpatient procedures)
  • Drug-free (no narcotics or over-the-counter medications required)
  • No side effects (except for a possible light humming sensation, which we can adapt if your skin is unable to sustain any physical contact.)

 How does scrambler therapy work?

Click the image to read about Abby’s scrambler therapy success at 13-years-old.

Children or teenagers are comfortably connected to the Calmare Pain Therapy Treatment® device via small electrodes (similar to those used in EKG and other medical procedures) placed on the patient’s skin at the pain site/s.

The device then sends a very low current of electrical stimulation through the skin and nerve fibers, which carries a “no-pain” signal to the brain, essentially overriding the previous pain signal.

We recommend the child have books, magazines or handheld entertainment to help pass the time during the 35-minute daily treatments.

In some cases, pain relief has been reported after the first treatment, but each child’s case is unique.

Scrambler therapy treatments are performed over a two-week period, with the goal of the patient’s pain steadily decreasing, eliminating the need for wheelchairs, canes or any mobility support devices.

After ample rest and continued recovery at home, pediatric patients are encouraged to ease back into normal daily activities.

Eligibility criteria for pediatric Calmare patients

  • Prior to approval for treatment, parents should provide copies of the child’s MRIs, EMGs and/or CAT scans.
  • We treat children who have been medically-diagnosed with neuropathy
  • Youngsters should be able to describe where their pain is located, and on a scale of one to 10, roughly describe the level of pain with some accuracy.
  • Children should also be able to verbalize if their pain level increases or decreases.

Since the Calmare MC-5A device is FDA-cleared, has no side effects and cannot worsen an existing condition, the overall risk factor is very low.

There are no drugs, injections or surgery connected with scrambler therapy.

Seventy-five Calmare patients shared their experiences on video

During the 10-treatment course of therapy, most children will be able to identify a reduction in pain by the fifth treatment, some as soon as the first treatment.

Children with CRPS

Child has successful calmare pain therapy treatment
Click the image to watch 10-year-old Kiera’s Calmare Therapy experience.

Most families with a child experiencing chronic pain have previously tried ‘every pain management treatment under the sun’ before contacting us, especially for children living with CRPS / RSD / RND.

Not surprisingly, many are initially skeptical (and who could blame them?) about the potential for pain relief using scrambler therapy.

And after 10 daily Calmare treatment sessions, lasting about 35-minutes each, more than half of the pediatric patient we treat experience “very significant and sustained pain relief.”

Does Calmare work for every child? Sadly, like any therapy or medication, it does not work for everyone and we do not guarantee success.

Disappointing outcomes are often attributed to additional health issues inhibiting pain relief, misdiagnosis of the neuropathy (it is a structural injury rather than a nerve injury) or there is an additional undiagnosed medical condition/s.

Now that school is coming to a close for many students, summer is an ideal time to consider pain management.

Dr. Cooney offers no-cost phone consultations to discuss the child’s case, review medical records and answer questions.

Calmare Therapy NJ USA Expands Again

September 10, 2018

By Dr. Michael J. Cooney Clinical Director

Calmare Certified Provider

By Dr. Michael J. Cooney, Clinical Director

I’ve been in the pain management field since Gerald Ford was president. Over the course of my career, I’ve seen countless pain management therapies and pain medications come and go.

During all of those years, I’ve never seen patient outcomes come anywhere close to what we have achieved with Calmare scrambler therapy.

Calmare NJ USA Patient Testimonials on YouTube

Since we introduced “the scrambler” in 2011, we have watched children, teens, adults and seniors’ lives transformed by its uncanny ability to reduce or eliminate chronic pain (neuropathy).

We have been able to help people who had already tried all the drugs, the invasive therapies, the painful procedures and the failed surgeries, without success.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think people in pain would travel to us for treatment from Australia, South Africa, South America, Europe and Canada.

Over 25% of Americans with Chronic Pain Affected by High Impact Chronic Pain (MD Magazine)

After careful thought and consideration, I have decided to close our physical therapy and chiropractic practice to free up my time to help more people fighting chronic pain as a result of:

* Surgery
* Cancer treatment (CIPN)
* Shingles (PHN)
* CRPS
* Fibromyalgia
* Diabetic neuropathy
* Other nerve pain conditions

Don’t get me wrong–scrambler therapy doesn’t work wonders for everyone, unfortunately. It is not a miracle treatment and you’ll never hear me say that it is.

But in the majority of people I have treated,
the pain reduction results have been life-changing.

So starting today, we will be able to help more people, provide quicker service and offer a broader range of appointments.

If you’re ready to try a newer way to fight pain, you’ve come to the right place.

Here’s to winning the war on pain, one patient at a time.

If you are reading this article, you may have already tried countless pain management medications, therapies and painful procedures, all in an effort to tame the chronic pain monster.

Rest assured, you are not alone.

By the time most of our patients come to our clinic here in New Jersey, they have undergone all of these frustrating, heartbreaking and bank-account-draining experiences.

One of the many ways we strive to go above and beyond for patients is to offer an exclusive program called Calmare Patient-2-Patient, where future patients can talk by phone, Skype or email with one of our previous patients who has volunteered to share their personal treatment experiences.

Speak with Someone Fighting the Same Chronic Pain Battle

We’ll also do our best to put you in touch with one of our patient volunteers who has the same or a similar medical challenge to yours. (Our patient volunteers are not compensated).

The result? You can get firsthand information about what Calmare treatment is really like directly from other patients just like you!

It’s that simple.

More than 75 percent of the patients we have treated are pain-free or have significantly reduced their pain levels.

Now these patients have offered to “pay-it-forward.”

How does scrambler therapy reduce pain and physical symptoms?

(Keep in mind, the majority of our P2P patient volunteers are not medical professionals and cannot offer any medical advice or opinions).

Calmare Therapy NJ USA is One

ADDED DATES: Fibromyalgia Clinical Trial at Calmare NJ USA

CLINICAL TRIAL – DIAGNOSED FIBROMYALGIA

Study

To Measure Chronic Pain Reduction in Patients Diagnosed with Treatment-Resistant Fibromyalgia after Administering 3-5 Calmare (Scrambler Therapy) Treatments

Phase

Pilot

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals.

Calmare scrambler therapy is a drug-free, non-invasive, FDA-cleared therapy that painlessly scrambles a misfiring pain message from the brain, suggesting there is pain, when, in fact, there is not.

Purpose of the Clinical Trial

To document the viability of using scrambler therapy as a pain management solution to significantly reduce or eliminate neuropathic pain in patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

Your Calmare Post-Treatment Protocol

February 2, 2018

By Dr. Michael Cooney, Clinical Director

Congratulations!  You have completed your Calmare Therapy treatment protocol.

Now that you have less pain, or are pain-free, your quality of life is about to improve dramatically.

Due to you improved mobility and decrease in pain level, many Calmare patients feel like they are ready to climb Mount Everest.

But doing too much too soon can actually hamper and potentially jeopardize your positive outcome.

Therefore, I’ve outlined some instructions for patients (healthcare providers can contact directly for more detailed clinical guidelines) to ensure you recover optimally, and enjoy the benefits of Calmare Therapy for as long as possible.

Every patient’s medical history is unique and we welcome your individual questions about any of the recommendations cited below:

No Vigorous Exercise or Clinical Physical Therapy for Two Weeks after Treatment

Your body is in the midst of recalibrating itself since your Calmare treatments.

When you begin to exercise, be prepared for soreness associated with new this activity (a positive sign you have awakened muscles which had not been used before!)

During recovery, if an injury occurs, use ice to reduce swelling and inflammation.

To treat muscle soreness, use heat. In both cold and hot treatment, administer 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off for a period of one hour.

Don’t Overdo

While it is thrilling to feel less pain and be more mobile, muscles need time to adjust to renewed use. Be careful and cautious and don’t do too much too soon. If you feel tired or any pain, stop what you are doing and rest.

Additional Sleep

Your body needs to re-adjust to several physiological changes after treatment. More than likely, it has also been a long time since you have slept well.

You may need to sleep several more hours than usual for the next several weeks. This is normal.

Welcoming a Good Night’s Sleep After Calmare Therapy

Make an Appointment with Your Pain Management, Specialist or Family Physician

It’s important to discuss your successful treatment outcome with your doctor. It is likely that your medications, particularly for pain, may be lessened or eliminated completely.

Discuss how your lessened or eliminated pain will affect your holistic health and ask for guidelines going forward.

Improve Your Nutrition

Now that you are feeling better and moving more, you should see an improvement in your appetite. Take advantage of feeling better and fuel your recovering body with high-quality foods– fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts and protein (white before red).

Hydrate with at least 6 – 8 tall glasses of water daily.

Finally, for patients who treated beginning in 2018, your BrainSpan™ report will arrive soon after you have returned home. Based upon your blood work, the report will detail any diagnosed vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Speak with your primary care doctor about ways to increase your consumption, either through pills or the foods you eat regularly.

Journal How You Feel

We hope you will chronicle how you feel after Calmare Therapy. Keep a record of the new activities you are able to engage in and record how you feel during and after the activity.

We hope this treatment is life-altering for you. Therefore, chart your progress and celebrate your success!

If You Feel Pain

Depending on your medical condition and the length of time you have experienced it, pain may return (to a lesser degree).

Pay careful attention to any physical or emotional issues that may have contributed to this.

If pain continues for five continuous days, Calmare booster treatments (generally 1 – 3 treatments) may be necessary. Please call the office for further instructions.

Teenager is Pain-Free Again After Calmare Booster Treatments

January 22, 2018

Evan Wasser_2018
While Evan receives his Calmare Therapy treatment, our pet therapy dog Murphy keeps him company.

Thirteen-year-old Evan, from a mid-Atlantic state, underwent Calmare Therapy for CRPS, which he was diagnosed with after an elbow injury.

When he arrived at our New Jersey clinic last summer, the teenager was experiencing a chronic pain level of 8/10 from his hand to his shoulder.

Thankfully, after undergoing 10 scrambler therapy sessions, performed by clinical director Dr. Michael Cooney, he achieved a 0/10 pain-free state and returned home to start school.

A Re-Injury Triggers CRPS Symptoms

Unfortunately, he re-injured the elbow months later and his CRPS pain was all-too-happy to rear its ugly head once again.

But Evan’s family brought him back to us to undergo three Calmare booster treatments, which quickly brought his pain level back down to 0 once again.

“Some patients need booster treatments periodically if the pain level increases or there is a re-injury,” Dr. Cooney explains. “Evan’s parents acted quickly and brought him to the clinic, which helped us to reduce his pain and will hopefully sustain it.”

At Calmare Therapy NJ USA, we treat many children and teen patients who are battling chronic nerve pain, most commonly as a result of CRPS and fibromyalgia.

In 70 – 80% of patients, we achieve a significant lessening of pain or, in Evan’s case, send the patient home pain-free.

Especially valuable for pediatric patients,

Calmare has no side-effects, is drug-free,

non-invasive and painless.

Catherine Relieves Her 10-Year Fibromyalgia Pain with Calmare

July 28, 2017

Catherine Miller was diligent in her quest to lessen symptoms from diagnosed fibromyalgia and neuralgia. A professional who works at a local university in Pennsylvania,  she went to see several pain management specialists and used all the name brand chronic pain medications, steroids, epidurals and physical therapy.

Through her own research into new pain relief therapy options, she discovered Calmare scrambler therapy’s success combatting treatment-resistant pain and soon headed to New Jersey for therapy in 2016.

Catherine liked that scrambler therapy was a drug-free, painless treatment–without any unpleasant side effects.  “It was time to try an alternative therapy because I had nothing to lose and everything to gain,” she says.

Read about her fibromyalgia pain relief after 10 Calmare treatments.

The following year, her pain levels slowly increased, so she took action sooner rather than later and came back for five booster treatments in May 2017. She explains below:

Pain News Network Cites Calmare as Pain Reduction Champion

June 29, 2017

pain-news-network

Barby Ingle, a global chronic pain educator, patient advocate, and president of the International Pain Foundation, who lives with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), migralepsy and endometriosis, published a commentary this week in Pain News Network, citing Calmare Therapy as a key alternative medicine treatment for chronic nerve pain.

Excerpt:

“The provider I hear about the most having success with this form of treatment is Dr. Michael Cooney, a chiropractor practicing in New Jersey who sees patients from all over country.”

Ms. Ingle also refers to Calmare Therapy NJ clinical director Dr. Michael Cooney’s Pain News Network guest editorial  describing how scrambler therapy is a side-effect-free and drug-free alternative to help lessen or even resolve treatment- and medication-resistant chronic pain.

Calmare Therapy is an FDA-cleared neuropathic pain treatment for several conditions including injury, post-surgical pain, CRPS / RSD, postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) as a result of shingles, fibromyalgia, nerve pain after chemotherapy treatment (CIPN), diabetic nerve pain and other types of diagnosed nerve damage.

“I hear more than ever from others living with chronic pain that they “have tried everything” and nothing helps. But there are always new pain therapies being developed or improved; some real, some placebo, and some researched more than others.”

Virginia Woman’s CRPS Causes 10/10 Pain and Feet Lesions

May 26, 2017

Debbie Meade’s son begged for her feet to be amputated so she would no longer suffer with excruciating CRPS pain.

Her debilitating chronic pain had spread and was causing severe swelling in her feet, which eventually caused the skin to tear. The resulting lesions did not heal naturally, leaving her open to the danger of infection.

In addition, her pain level was regularly 10/10 on the McGill Pain Scale.

Arriving here in New Jersey using two canes for mobility, her life was about to change dramatically.

Debbie describes her Calmare Therapy experience (May 2017)
Calmare Scrambler Therapy History and Clinical Trial Outcomes

Calmare Therapy is a drug-free, FDA-cleared treatment that safely scrambles the pain message from the brain. It is painless and has no side effects.

The first study on scrambler therapy was published in 2003 by a team of researchers led by Giuseppe Marineo, professor in Delta Research and Development at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy.

His team found that scrambler therapy was effective in reducing pain symptoms in patients with severe, drug-resistant pain from terminal cancer.

Mayo Clinic physician and scrambler therapy researcher Charles L. Loprinzi, MD, reports on his team’s clinical findings with Healio (2016).

Scrambler Therapy Lessens Chronic Nerve Pain

Calmare (the brand name for the MC-5A scrambler therapy device) was later found to also aid in the lessening or alleviation of chronic nerve pain as a result of:

  • chemotherapy (CIPN)
  • diabetes (diabetic nerve pain)
  • fibromyalgia
  • back and neck pain
  • shingles (PHN)
  • failed back surgery syndrome
  • phantom limb pain
  • other neuropathic nerve pain conditions
Using Calmare to Reduce CRPS / RSD Neuropathy and Physical Symptoms

Clinical Director Dr. Michael Cooney at Calmare Therapy NJ USA has also successfully treated hundreds of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and RSD patients from around the world
