By Dr. Michael Cooney, Clinical Director

We began using Calmare scrambler therapy to combat CRPS in 2011. It all came about by coincidence–

For those of you with medication and treatment-resistant chronic pain, you can appreciate the tremendous frustration when traditional drugs and other mainstream pain management efforts fail to relieve or reduce your pain.

“Where do I turn when the pain management community has no more options left to help me manage my pain?”

This frustration and fear, to be honest, led some CRPS sufferers to contact me about the viability of using Calmare Therapy to combat CRPS/ RSD pain–and the many physical symptoms which often accompany this disease.

After discussing each CRPS patient’s full medical history, analyzing their previous therapy efforts, reviewing past and present medications, and evaluating pain level fluctuations, I felt comfortable that we could proceed with caution and closely monitor results.

The risk to trying Calmare was minimal–the FDA-cleared pain therapy has no side effects, is painless to undergo and completely non-invasive.

The single risk is that the therapy will not work.

Meet Amanda from Indiana, one of our first RSD patients

After Amanda, then a teenager, and her family took a gamble on Calmare Therapy, Amanda’s pain relief was so significant, she was able to:

  • Return to in-person high school
  • Go on to college and graduate
  • Marry the love of her life

(Note that Amanda did return over the years for a few Calmare booster treatments, when her pain level began to climb. After the boosters, her pain level returned to a steady 0-3).

After sharing Amanda’s reduction in chronic pain on our website and YouTube channel, people from around the world, who were also battling CRPS, began to come to our clinic for treatment.

Connecting with the Burning Nights CRPS organization in the UK

We have been fortunate to be supported by Burning Nights CRPS, a UK-based resource for people and families dealing with CRPS.

They offer a remarkable wealth of resources for people around the world with the aim of “helping to improve the quality of life for every CRPS sufferer around the world.”

In 2017, we were fortunate to welcome the organization’s founder, also a CRPS warrior, Victoria Abbott-Fleming, to our clinic for a tour and a demonstration of scrambler therapy.

Victoria, seated, founder of Burning Nights, and her husband, left, visited our clinic for a wonderful visit. Dr. Cooney is also shown with Star, a CRPS patient from Alabama, and her husband.

Today, we continue to support each other’s efforts. In fact, Burning Nights features a detailed description of Calmare on its Alternative Therapies for CRPS page.

In addition to a wealth of support and resource information available, I have written several articles that offer my personal insight into the benefits of scrambler therapy:

CRPS warriors are never alone

With the advancement of organizations like Burning Nights CRPS, people who are battling this chronic condition with currently no cure, can always find guidance and advice from doctors, experts, fellow warriors and their families.

CRPS warrior, you are never alone.

For the time being, while we await relief from COVID-19, online support networks can also offer a kind listening ear, fresh ideas, or just a gentle virtual hug on a bad day.

If you would like to discuss if Calmare might be right for you, please call our clinic and I will be happy to speak with you personally.

As a reminder, people in the US are permitted to enter New Jersey for pre-scheduled medical treatment, even if they come from a Travel Advisory state. Learn more: https://calmaretherapynj.com/2020/08/17/calmare-nj-accept-patients-from-travel-advisory-states/
