While the world continues to be focused on COVID-19, people living with medication and treatment-resident chronic pain are still in pain, still stuck at home, waiting for relief.

For many neuropathic pain sufferers, medications may temporarily dim the pain, but it is no solution, certainly.

I am enormously grateful to those talented physicians and scientists who don’t believe that pain can only be cured with drugs, surgery or painful procedures.

To this day, the best scientific overview of scrambler therapy, provided by leading US pain management experts, is the published article by the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy.

“What is Scrambler Therapy and How Does it Work?” is written by Dr. Thomas Smith, Director of Palliative Medicine, Harry J. Duffey Family Professor of Palliative Medicine, Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Charles Loprinzi, Regis Professor of Breast Cancer Research, Mayo Clinic.

Both physician researchers have conducted their own randomized clinical trials, comparing scrambler therapy to “sham” pain management medical devices.

Both researchers yielded positive pain reduction from their individual trials:

Dr. Smith’s trials

Article excerpt:

“We are interested in treatments that might work and don’t cause patient side effects. A recent review of 20 scientific reports on scrambler therapy noted no harm in any trial, with most reporting a substantial relief of pain. The two randomized trials comparing “sham” to real Scrambler Therapy showed a 50% reduction in low back pain, and a 91% reduction in pain from failed back syndrome, post herpetic neuropathy, and spinal cord stenosis. In all trials, pain relief was obvious in the first 3 days, continued to get better, and usually lasted several months.”

On Monday, May 4, 2020, we reopened the clinic here in New Jersey on a limited scale, treating only one patient at a time, with careful protective measures in place.

Most importantly, if our patient has the mobility to enter the clinic alone, we strongly request that they not be accompanied by family or friends in the clinic.

So far, so good.
